Christmas craft season is long past and your glue and glitter is starting to dry up. But don’t put it away just yet. We’ve got a few great Easter DIYs that will get your creative juices flowing. Grab the kids and spend an afternoon with your favorite funny bunnies whipping up these fun – and functional – Easter crafts.
Weave an Easter basket
Basket weaving is often thought of as an ancient art that’s hard to master. And though that’s true with intricate designs, kids as young as 7 can make their own basic willow basket out of materials foraged from your local green space. You’ll need several hours and a large work area. This tutorial takes you step by step and includes detailed instructions and pictures to help you along the way. If you don’t have access to willow branches or prefer to recycle materials you already have, you can use old newspaper, magazines, or construction paper to weave a paper basket.
Plan a piñata party
There are few things more interesting to kids than an Easter egg piñata party. Something about bright colors and the promise of a sweet treat brings kids of all ages up to bat. But piñatas are expensive, and no one wants to waste $40 on something that’s going to be beaten up and tossed in the trash.
With materials you already have on hand – glue, a balloon, newspaper, and tissue paper – you and the kids can make your own in a single weekend. Start by blowing up a large balloon and covering with a thick layer of newspaper coated in a mix of glue and water. Let it dry overnight, then decorate with tissue paper in the design of your choice. Leave a 2-inch opening at the top so you can fill your piñata with your favorite treats.
Brandish bunny ears
A quick and easy no-sew craft, bunny ears are the perfect creative endeavor for the youngest crafter in your family. A pair of scissors, cardboard, a headband, and glue are all you need to put together your own festive head covering for school, work, or your Easter egg hunt. Paint, crayons, and decorative cloth are optional, but these items will give your bunny ears that personal touch.
Extra on the eggs
Don’t settle for boring pastel or environmentally-damaging plastic eggs this year. Take your Easter eggs to the next level with these tips:
- Use brown eggs for deep, rich color
- Use nail polish and water to create awesome, one-of-a-kind marbled designs (don’t eat these)
- Modge Podge + feathers = elegant eggs
- Whipped cream lets you makes awesome tie-dye eggs
- Cut designs out of fancy napkins and adhere to eggs
- Decorate with washi tape
- Use watercolor paints for custom designs
There is never a wrong time to spend an afternoon crafting with your family. Not only does it help children explore their own creativity, but crafting around the holidays is also an excellent way to teach your children about family traditions. So, roll up your sleeves, gather your supplies, and be prepared to impress with your eggs-traordinary Easter crafts.
